Even though he had little money and very few tools, his enthusiasm, frontier spirit and the support of his family convinced him that he could be successful. Negotiating a long term lease for 80 uncleared acres at $1.00 an acre, he began the task of clearing the land and putting in crops.

Willis hoped that he could support his family by planting a large vegetable garden, milking cows, and raising potatoes on the rest of the land. With the help of his wife, son, and four daughters he cleared the land. Crops were planted and he began the tedious task of weeding and watering the crops until harvest.

With his rudimentary tools, it seemed like he and his family were toiling from sun-up to sun-down just keeping the weeds from taking over his garden and crops.

Desperate to make the work easier for his wife and daughters, Willis took an old saw blade and created a uniquely-shaped tool that could be used by his family to weed the garden more quickly. To cut down on back strain, he added a long handle so that weeding could be done without stooping over. Willis had made the world's first Winged Weeder!®
